Spring 2023 at Roy Blyth

Here's what's happening at Roy Blyth this spring!

We have lots of new and exciting things happening this spring at Roy Blyth, across all our shop premises and also on the farm!

Some very happy cattle out in the fields last spring!

On the farm

With the weather starting to warm up and the days getting longer, the cattle are readily awaiting being released back outside into the grass fields. We keep our cattle and sheep inside during winter so we can monitor their food intake to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need. We hope to get both cattle and sheep back outside by the end of February once the ground is dry. We also have many spring calves already being born so it is very important they are kept warm indoors with their mothers and so we can keep an eye on them for the first few weeks of their lives. As tough as our Charolais cattle are, we prefer all calves to be born indoors where possible so we can be there to help mother and baby, both during labor and for the first few weeks after in any way if needed.

Lambing preparations are in full swing ready for Spring lambing to start early February! All expectant mothers are kept in what we call the 'maternity shed' and separated by their expected number of lambs (1, 2 or 3). Once they give birth they are separated into their own personal pen with their lambs where they get extra food and water to help with the first weeks of motherhood. Then once the lambs are strong enough they will be released outside into the fields where they can enjoy the lush grass and sunlight. We hope to see Spring lambs prancing in our fields by early March!

Neil the farmer will be heading to Stirling Bull Sales in February with some of our beautiful young Charolais bulls where we will (hopefully) sell them to other farmers for them to use as breeding bulls for their cattle.
